Here's to 2011!

JANUARY

We started the year saying goodbye to Jason

He went to Idaho for a month-long rotation

It would have been great if we all could have gone

but the doctor said I was just 'too far along'

FEBRUARY

Grandma Mayo came before the due date

It would have been nice to know that this baby'd be late

We finally welcomed our Lydia May

Seven pounds and nine ounces of joy you might say

MARCH

Ma and Pa Crofts came visiting next

Their first trip our here to the mid-west

The kids were excited, I can't fail to mention

They soaked-up all of the extra attention

APRIL

To church we went, our baby to bless

My mom crochetted her a lovely white dress

David thought it espcially cool

When all his friend came for pre-school

MAY

We saw a tulip festival in a Dutch town

Where we met-up with friends for a look around

On Memorial Day we had BBQ

With all the wonderful people we knew

JUNE

Then I took the kids, and J worried lots

As we headed to Vegas, but not to play slots

The family reunion this year was quite fun

We visited, swam, and soaked-up the sun

JULY

Two little teeth our Lydia got

In Primary David gave his first talk

Next, sadly, Jason left to OK

but Lisa and Cody moved here to stay

AUGUST

David discovered he had a new love

As he caught every frog, toad, tadpole, and bug

When we snuck in a camping trip in a hurry

Before Jason headed off to Missouri

SEPTEMBER

We enjoyed the fall and all of its charms

As we picked blueberries at Berry Patch Farms

David played soccer and learned pretty quick

How fun it can be when a goal he did kick

OCTOBER

we had a spooky and fun Halloween

With two of the cutest kids that you've seen

We partied and had a great Trunk-or-Treat

With more candy than anyone really should eat

NOVEMBER

At Thanksgiving we couldn't believe the amount

When all of our blessings we started to count

Our stomaches just weren't as big as our eyes

as we dished ourselves turkey, potatoes, and pies

DECEMBER

We had a wonderful Christmas this year

With stockings and presents and plenty of cheer

Now we just thank our Father in Heaven

That we have survived 2011!

About Time

I figure an update on the kids is over due.

We'll start with Little Lydia this time...

Lydia is such a good baby.

She's generally mild mannered. She giggles and laughs when you tickle or tease her, roars when you play with her, pouts when you ignore her, but most of the time is just completely content, pleasant, and sweet.

Her hair however, has some serious attitude. It's hard to see, but the entire top stands strait up. Always. It's impossible to make it do anything else.

Remember the pouting I mentioned.

I had to take a picture because this is so tipical Lydia when a toy is just too far away, or I'm making dinner instead of paying attention to her. She doesn't usually throw a fit, just lays flat on the floor like she's so abandoned.

She does love the swings at the park and being outside. She is crawling all over the place now. Still army crawling most of the time. She likes everything that is David's. I kid you not, she tried to crawl for the first time on David's birthday. His new toys were quite the motivation.

She was a trooper on Halloween too. (Sorry no good costume pics. She was a lady bug, but she's bundled up in this picture and sitting on her wings.)

She's a great eater. Even when you can tell she doesn't like it and makes faces after every bite she'll keep opening her mouth until she's full. It's kinda sad- and cute. But usually she's not picky.

David, David, David

He's been spending A LOT of time drawing. (this is a picture of dragons. A mom, dad, babies, and eggs.) We've been working on his ABC's too and loves writing his name.

He likes to cheese for the camera too. Luckily he still adores his sister. His favorite thing is to give her a hug and rub his cheeks on her fuzzy hair.

We went to the pumpkin patch and raced on the peddal carts. He won of course- with a little help from Dad.

This year David told me maybe he didn't want to carve pumpkins this year (after I told him he had to help pull out the pumpkin guts.) He said it was just too yucky. Apparently he changed his mind when it looked like Uncle Cody was having all the fun.

David determined to be a dragon for Halloween this year. And I was determined NOT to sew his costume. He won. I sewed a dragon. But only after I figured I could make the entire costume for free using fabric a friend had given me and scraps I had. Then I just couldn't justify paying for one.

In the end I thought it turned out pretty great. I figured it was good enough when I had him try it on and he roared and ran (flew) away.

We had a fluke snow storm the other day. (Luckily it's melted now). Jason had the morning off and they built this snowman. Dave was so proud. Later he kept asking me if we needed to go get his rocks (the eyes) so they didn't get lost when the snowman melted. Apparently they were pretty important rocks.

Berries, First Bites, and Camping, and Creatures

We've been so busy lately. Busy having fun that is!

A couple weeks ago we went to a berry patch and picked fresh blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Sooo Delicious! We could tell the raspberries were David's favorite because he had a harder time putting them in bucket and not in his mouth :)

I finally decided to give Lydia food. (She just goes crazy when we eat.) Rice cearial seems pretty boring to me, but she couldn't have been more excited! I think she'll be a good little eater. See how happy she is.

David wanted to show me that he liked his breakfast too.

This past weekend we went camping up at Ledges State Park. (If you live in the area and havn't been, you must!) It was so gorgeous and the weather was great!

David was so excited to go camping he was litterally jumping up and down with anticipation.

We went up Friday morning and spent the day hiking, and then stayed over night and hiked more Saturday.

Like I said before, it was beautiful!

I couldn't believe how well David did hiking around. Especially since alot of the trail looked like this!

We went to Ledges a couple years ago and took a picture here, so we had to do it again.

David 'helped' Jason put the tent up and was quite proud.

We saw some deer on our hike, but the best part of the whole trip for David was...

Hunting for creatures!!!!

and Crawdads.

He was absolutely in heaven!!!

Summer Days!

Lydia is still growing like a weed and even has a new tooth!

(I was hoping she'd wait a while before teething. David got his first tooth at 9 months and she was only

5 months! Oh well, one down right.)

Cody and Lisa are now our neighbors and the kids are loving the extra attention!

My mom tells me I've been slacking again so here we go. The most recent pics are first and I'll go back from there...

Lydia is finally big enough to play with toys- and David loves showing her how its done.

We just took Lydia to her 4 month doctors appointment. She's over 16 pounds and 25 1/2 inches long, which puts her in the 95th percentile baby!

Of course we think she's as pretty as can be.

We went to a family reunion in Las Vegas. It was sooo good to see family!!!

We were especially excited to get these two back together. Sometimes I think they act like brother and sister. (even argue like they are :) You can tell they are WAY up past their bed time. Vacation right?

We played games at a park one afternoon and I thougth this picure was hillarious. I can just see David thinking.. "I don't know what your problem is guys, just eat the cookie."

Here's a little update on the kids.

Sometimes on the computer, but usually in whatever little notebook her can find. It started when he helped Jason 'count' people in church one week. (J's a ward clerk). He followed Jason down the isles writing 'numbers' in his little notebook. Now Dave walks around scribbling little notes ALL the time. Pretty cute.

Trick or Treat!

I know it's a little sad, but on the last day of Halloween, (I swear it lasts a week here), we finally cornered David and took and a picture of him in his costume. Dave LOVED being Peter Pan. And I thought he looked rather adorable.
His favorite part of the costume of course.. the sword. Mom's favorite part, it doesn't get much easier or cheeper than cutting the edge of t-shirt and making a felt hat.

Dave designed his own jack-o-lantern this year. He drew the face, Jason scooped the guts (I tried to get Dave to but he thought it was 'not a good idea', and I tried to cut the face as exactly as possible.

Pretty cute if you ask me.

David had his 3rd birthday! Yeah! (and scary for me, that's just too big). He had a monster birthday party complete with monster cupcakes. What a crazy kid... I don't know if I've ever seen him so wild. (Well, except when he's wrestling with Dad). Happy Brithday DAVID!!!

We visited the pumpkin patch with friends again this year and had a great time. We literally spent the whole day there. We went on tractor rides, picked a pumpkin, Dave played in the corn pit, pet the goats (always a favorite of his), tried out a corn maze, had a peddal go-cart race, and totally enjoyed a beautiful day outside.

Apple Orchard

This year our family went to a near by apple orchard. The weather was perfect. It was so fun! David LOVED picking the apples (and getting pulled in the wagon of course). And I loved the apple pie that came a couple days later- yum.

So David has a few favorite things he will eat (he is getting better).... spaghetti is one of them and ALWAYS has been. I let him 'help' stir the sauce the other day. Trying to be a good mom right? Don't worry the oven was not on. I turn around for one minute and this is what happens. "I needed a little taste Mom." Uh -huh. I think he would have eaten the whole pot if I let him. What a cute kid.

The other day I was reading my friend Courtney's blog and she tagged me to write about the 10th picture in my 1st picture file on my computer. I have to admit that I have been tagged several times before and never done it, but I was curious. Turns out it was my recipe file and this was the picture. So I decided I better share the recipe since these really are the best blueberry muffins ever! (not the best for you, but I really don't care.) So try out the recipe and if you like it, thank Court!

Blueberry Muffins

3 cups flour

1 Tbsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

10 Tbsp butter (1 1/4 sticks) softened

1 cup sugar

2 large eggs

1 1/2 cups plain yogurt

1 tsp grated lemon peel

1 1/2 cups blueberries

1 Tbsp flour (if using defrosted berries)

Adjust the oven rack to the middle-lower part of the oven. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Whisk the flour, baking powder, soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar, beating until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating until incorporated after each one. Beat in the lemon peal.

Beat in one half of the dry ingredients until just incorporated. Beat in 1/3 of the yogurt. Beat in half of the remaining dry ingredients then the second third of the yogurt. Beat in remaining dry then remaining yogurt. Do not over beat. Fold in berries. If you are using defrosted berries, coat them in flour first.

Use a standart 12 muffin pan with paper liners. Distribute the batter evenly among cups. (Batter will heap over the top) Bake until muffins are golden brown and toothpick comes out clean, about 25 to 30 minutes Set on wire rack to cool for 5 minutes. Remove from pan and serve warm.

You should probably believe you kid when he tells you that there are bugs... everywhere (and if they weren't there at first, he'll look and dig and wait til there are. Then he's never wrong)...

MOST IMPORTANTLY you should probably believe your dad when he tells you that easter egg dye tablets are NOT CANDY!!! (good thing we caught that one pretty quick. I can only imagine.)

Second Year... Un-officially Over

Jason has un-officially finished his second year of med school. Yeah!!!! This means that they've had the right of passage ceremony but he technically still has a few more weeks of class. So we'll celebrate when he really is done with class and then we'll celebrate MORE when he passes his boards in early July! (See how happy we already are about no more classes?) I have such a wonderful, brilliant, handsome husband!!!

Easter Egg Hunt #1

Yeah for Easter! We have the best friends here, and thanks to everyone's help we also had the best EASTER EGG HUNT! All the moms and kids met at a park brought eggs to donate to the cause and a few minutes later the hunt was on. Its a good thing it only took a few minutes too, because the rain really started falling. We were just in time! Thanks again to everyone who came and hope you had a great time too.

the REAL reason

It has been a while since I put up new pictures of David, and let's admit, thats the real reason I even have a blog! So here he is.....

Lately Dave thinks its cool to 'hide' under all his animals and wait for someone to come find him. He thinks he's hillarious!

The other day David wanted to play in the cupboard, a few minutes later I opened it up and this is what I found. He played in there FOREVER! It seemed kind of wrong to let my kid sit in a cupboard with the door closed for so long, but I didn't want to be the one to ruin the fun and making dinner was sure easy!

David loves to play with 'sand'. You can see how much by the smile. Sadly he doesn't get to as much as he would like, because really, that stuff gets everywhere! Sometimes I'm a good mom though and let him.

So, I keep opening this blog hoping that it will have magically been updated. It never is. I guess it's about time I did it myself. Jason and I went on a REAL date! Yeah for the DMU Gala! Jason calls it the medical school prom. Its a set day, time, place, all we have to do is show up... hense us actually going out. This year though I decided to make a dress, which added a bit more stress. Luckily I finished at 4 that afternoon.. still time to eat dinner, get ready and go. We had a great time. (thanks to Ty and Jaime for babysitting). There was music (of sorts), dancing (why some people think it is okay to dance with a full glass/bottle of alcohol in hand is beyond me), and food (which I think is Jason's favorite part). He tries to be adventurous and try all the strange cheese. Goat cheese is still bad. I'm a little less brave and stick to things WITHOUT mold on them. (you can call it 'aged' all you want, its moldy). Anyway, we had a great time!

projects

So, I always feel like I am working on a million projects, but have nothing to show for it. (which is really annoying when I want to do the project again, but can't remember how I did it). Lately I've been trying to take pictures as I finish. Here are some I've done in the last few months....

These are scripture bags Shalie and I made for the young women in our ward. I thought they turned out really cute and now want one for myself... of course it will probably be froever before that happens... way down on the list.

These are wall hangings I painted for Danna for her little girls room. (it was fun to do a cute girl project since I have a boy). I can't take credit for the design though, she had a photo of what she wanted and I mostly copied it. The best part about this was that she took family pictures for us in return. Yeah!!! Anyone else want a sweet trade? :)

So I have to admit that I am slightly addicted to refinishing old furniture. It always comes out so rewarding in the end. This one was by far the MOST WORK! But, it payed off. I spent a good part of this fall sanding and sanding and sanding and finally refinishing this old dresser we inherited from my parents. I stained it to match Davids bed so they look like a 'set'. I bought new hardware too and I LOVE how it turned out. No pre-project picture to compare it to of course.

Here Comes Santa Claus

Dave got to see Santa a couple times this week. First at the mall, and then at a Primary Christmas party. What did he ask for? A treat. He was a little bit shy at first (we havn't talked alot about Santa), but they were friends by the end! (Also, I think David is just so cute in his coat and hat, so I had to add a pic.)

Jason experienced his first Medical School snow day this past week. Yeah! We've decided snow days are just as exciting now as when we were kids. There really was a wicked storm, check out our car. (Thanks J for digging us out!) Dave thought it was so fun and kept bringing me his boots all day- he NEEDED to walk in the snow.

Halloween was Great! David was the cutest lion you've ever seen. (I was just glad I got his costume made in time). We went to a halloween party with friends, went trick-or-treating on beggars night, and to a Trunk-or-treat on halloween. So I think we fully enjoyed the holiday. David was an expert at saying "Trick or Treat", he even practiced several times between each car. Sooooo cute!

Fall in Iowa

We love fall in Iowa. This year is a little colder than last, but still good. We went to Howell's pumpin patch a couple times. Dave got to pick his own pumpkin (he is very proud). He also loves crunching the leaves. We can't go anywhere without stopping to stomp on a few leaves first. He gets really mad when it rains and I won't let him jump in the soggy ones. Hope you're all enjoying fall like we are. Look for extra cute Halloween pics to come soon!

David and Ashtyn have been singing so much lately and it is adorable! Ashtyn of course, sings the whole song. David just sings his favorite parts. In nursery they get to clap when they finish a song, so Davie cheers for himself everytime he finishes a song at home too. We're so proud.

August has been a great month! Here's what we've been up to...

The heat and humidity finally arrived in full force. Luckily David loves the swimming pool, and the sprinklers, and somtimes even the squit-bottle will work.

David and I took a trip to the fire station with our friends. We got the see all the big fire engines 'whee-oh whee-oh' and David even climbed inside! (of course I forgot the camera, but he still looked cute with his hat and badge.)
We took a little trip to Raccoon River park. Despite the rain, we had a great time on the playground. (We aren't tough enough to swim in the lake when its raining.)

Summer Fun

Since Jason was about to start school we decides to cram in as much fun as we could the last few days. A couple of our favorites were a trip to Ledges State park and Racoon River Park. Here are our pics from Ledges. It was beautiful there! David's favorite part was, of course, playing in the water. He also liked climbing all the stone steps. Racoon River was probably his favorite though. There's a lake with a 'beach' and he had a blast swimming. Again the water thing. At least I know what will make him happy. Now, Jason's back to school and we'll have to save the trips for later. Summer is too short.

Idaho Vacation!

We're Home! We had a wonderful vacation to Idaho this last month. It was quite the drive, but well worth it. Thanks to Davie for being mostly good in the car. David was completely spoiled by both sets of grandparents, and even some great grandparents. He thought it was great. We had tons of fun with all the family their. We even went swimming and camping at Island Park. Now we're finally home and have a few days to play still before Jason starts school again.

For a few days last week Jason had been saying that he thought we had a mouse in our walls. I told him he was imagining it, mostly because I was hoping he was. Then friday afternoon I was playing with David in the living room and I could definately hear something running around in the cealing and scratching at the vents trying to get out. GROSS! So I went down to the office to tell them we had a mouse problem, came back, and Davie and I started eating lunch. I heard our little mistery visitor run to the kitchen ceiling vent to try to escape. I could see the little claws poking out of the vent. Then something else started coming out, a beak! I have to admit that although having a bird stuck in our walls is still unsettling, I was very glad it wasn't a mouse/rat. Soon the bird fell down the shaft and into the bottom vent and was now going crazy. (You can see the feathers sticking out in the pic.) David was pointing to the vent saying uh-oh, Uh-Oh, UH-OH! Long story short, Dave was afraid to go into the kitchen and we had to wait almost an hour for the maintenance guys to come help me get the bird out. The next day David was still a bit skiddish by the vent and would point and say "tweet tweet". The real mistery is how the bird got in the vent in the first place!

Easter

We hope everyone had a Happy Easter! We sure did.

Some moms in the neighborhood put together an Easter egg hunt for the kinds on Saturday. The weather was perfect and we had such a good time.

By the end of the hunt, Dave decided throwing the eggs was much more fun than putting them in the basket.

Ga'ma and Papa, the Zoo, and Nauvoo

Grandma and Grandpa Mayo (aka my parents) came to visit us in March. We had so much fun seeing them and we even made time for some side-trips. David made friends with the llamas and the goats at the Zoo. I was surprised how brave he was. His favorite was probably the giant fish though. Later we went to Carthage and Nauvoo. Despite the set backs with the flew, we had a good time and even found a couple quotes from on of our ancestors, Jane Johnston Black. David loved all the extra attention and we didn't mind either. We're so glad G'ma and G'pa came to visit and can't wait to see more family in June!

Dance!

Lately David and Ashtyn have REALLY been wanting to dance. They're pretty good at it too. I thought this one was especially cute. Check out their moves. Just so you know, Ashtyn is saying "Emmy, DANCE!" Apparently its more fun if everyone joins in.

Garbage Truck

David LOVES the garbage truck (as any 1 1/2 year old boy should). I finally cought one of his reactions on video. He's toned down a bit lately, but at the time this was a mild reaction. He usually says "bye" when the truck leaves too, but they were taking forever.

So David and Ashtyn were playing the other day when it all of a sudden got quiet. (Which usually means something suspcious is happening with those two around.) So I peeked into Dave's room to check on them and this is what I found. I had to RUN and get the camera, but luckily we made it. Is this not the funnies thing ever? Keep in mind that these two are 16 and 18 months. What crazy kids!! (Now only if this happened more often :)

We had a great Christmas this year. We decided just to stay home and do out family visiting in the summer. It was nice to relax a little, but the best part was that Jason had a much needed break from school. Yeah!

David is 13 months old, (almost 14 now). He got these cute clothes from his Grandma Crofts for his birthday, so we thought we'd take pictures to show everyone how adorable our kid is. David is such a fun kid. He's into the "uh-oh" phase right now. The other day he even hid behind his crib then peeked out at me and said Peek-a-boo. He said it several more times that day, but not since. What a cutie!

We had a great Halloween. I put what sewing skills I have to good use and made David a dinosaur costume. He was adorable! We went to a kids halloween party as well as trunk or treat, so David made out pretty well. Jason and I enjoyed sharing some of his candy. Hope you all had a happy Halloween too!

New Hair Cut and Funny Faces

David got his first real hair cut. It was getting really long in the middle like a mohawk, but still short everywhere else. We decided to try and avoid the comb-over bit and just cut it. He looks so handsome. When I tried to take his picture though he kept making funny faces. What a silly kid!

David is a whole year old, so I decided it was time for some pictures. I tried taking his picture outside in the grass, but he ran everywhere and went crazy... running away from me and at me. David decided that he can now walk. One day he would take a few steps, and the next day he walked everywhere! He looks so cute and we're so proud so I thought I would share. Unfortunately he has a hard time walking when he is excited, so everytime I try to get a video he falls down alot. We still think it's impressive though.

I can't believe that David is one year old already! Time flies. We had a birthday party for him and Jason says its a good thing he won't remember this birthday because he was too spoiled. (Thanks to all the family and friends). We even made him a caterpillar birthday cake. Everyone was impressed with his ability to devour a cupcake. I don't actually think that he ate very much, he's just good at smashing.

White Coat

Jason officially has his white coat now. Last Saturday the boys (Jason and Tyler) had "White Coat Ceremony" They basically say an oath, sign their name to an honor code, and get to 'officially' put thier white coats on. Doesnt' he look handsome!

Two little teeth

I told David I wanted a picture of his two little teeth to show his grandma. Then this is what he did. I thought it was hillarious. What is even funnier... now, is the story of how David got that second tooth. We were on the first leg of our expedition out here, Idaho Falls to Provo.Tyler an Jason were driving the moving truck and Jaime and I were in the car with the babies (David and Ashtyn) David picked that day to "teeth". He screamed and cried the whole way. Ashtyn was covering her ears poor girl. Then she got car sick and threw up alot..... a very lot. We stopped at a gas station to clean them up and calm them down wich took quite a while. The same gas station, come to find out later, that the boys had stopped at with a flat tire just a few minutes after we left. Then David cried more, til he made himself throw up... then cried more. We finally made it to Provo though. Jaime and Ashtyn decided they'd fly the rest of the way. (Can't blame them). Two more days in the car and one tooth later, we were here! We've loved it ever since.

Alot of people have been asking me what's up with our family lately, so here is the news. I graduated from BYUI wiht my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree last April and Jason graduated with a Bachelors in Biology in December. David was born on September 27th and is now almost 9 months old!!! I stay home with David while Jason works at Assisted Living for now, we'll be glad when that's over. Jason was accepted to medical school in Des Moines, Iowa. We well be moving to West Des Moines soon. We leave here July 28th, go to Provo and load up Tyler and Jaime (Tyler is going to the same med school, and living in the same apts), and arrive at our new home on August 1st. The boys start orientation on the 5th, so they'll be right to work. My 'little' brother Shaun gets home from his mission on July 18th. We are very excited to see him before we leave, and also glad family will be visiting. We can't believe it has been 2 years though. Besides that I really should be packing. I havn't started. We're sad to leave so many friends and family when we move, but we're WAY EXCITED to go!

New Toy

My Mom got David this toy (the stacking rings) and I hid it away for a while. I brought it out the other day and David loves it. Of course he doesn't stack them. He usually tries to knock them over before I can stack them, but that works. He is a boy. He also likes wearing them on his feet. It's pretty cute. Everyone should have one. Anything that can keep a baby occupied long enough for me to get something done is worth it.

David is now kind of crawling. Not on his hands and knees yet, but lets just say he gets wherever he wants. I decided the trick to learning to crawl is to have the right motivation. For David, the stereo is the best motivator, followed closely by my plants,elecrical cords, and the flashing green power button on the computer. (Basically anything he isn't sapposed to have). He's cute though, and alot happier now that he can get around. (Until I take the plants away that is).

So I had a couple of baby showers coming up and no money. I wanted to give a nice gift though, since they were for close friends. Here is what I came up with. I made these baby towels from one bath towel ($4) and some scrap fabric and embroidery floss I had laying around. They turned out great and were surprisingly easy. Just thought I'd share the idea!
